Love or Lies? – Who Can You Trust (resource pack)

For several years Rachel Reynolds and Jayne Kerr have been working with sexually exploited young people delivering prevention workshops within schools and community settings. As a result of these workshops, and the one-to-one support given to young people identified as at risk of, or involved in, sexual exploitation, it became apparent that there was a need for a more intensive programme aimed at ALL young people, not just those thought to be most vulnerable.

It was important to be able to raise the issue of sexual exploitation in a way that was relevant to all young people. It was therefore necessary for the primary focus to shift away from sexual relationships. For young people to be able to identify a potentially ‘risky’ association, they need an opportunity to explore the characteristics that make up a positive relationship.

The “Love or Lies?” education resource was developed to help schools and other settings explore positive and negative relationships, peer pressure and sexual exploitation. Originally launched in 2006 as Friend or Foe the pack was piloted in secondary schools in Sheffield and was cited as good practice in the Home Office funded Sex Education Forum Factsheet 37 (Sex Education Forum October 2006).

The pack was fully updated in January 2012 to include a number of exercises addressing the risks associated with new technologies, and materials aimed at increasing knowledge and confidence of staff involved in delivery.

Young girl testifies against men who forced prostitution

Nine men have been convicted in connection with the sexual exploitation of a 14 year old girl who was was forced into prostitution and sexually abused after going missing from her home in Manchester.

It takes a huge amount of courage for a young girl to testify against her exploiters like this. She is incredibly brave. This is why we are so passionate about raising awareness of the sexual exploitation of young people through the MDL campaign.

As you may have heard, My Dangerous Loverboy was nominated for best cross platform award at last night’s RTS awards. Unfortunately didn’t win and the ceremony demonstrated a sad reflection on TV’s obsession with celebrity over anything with value and integrity. However, the nomination has been very useful in itself.

In order to vent our frustration and channel the energy from the disappointment we have put together this short animation about the judging process using a nifty online toolkit called xtranormal. I hope you like it!

MDL up for Royal Television Society Award

My Dangerous Loverboy, a collaborative voluntary project between digital agency Quba and film-makers Virginia Heath and Grant Keir, uses social media websites such as Facebook and Youtube to raise awareness of a largely undetected crime. Having attracted over 500 fans on Facebook and taken the message into 25 schools in the city, the group could be in line to win the new ‘Best Cross Platform’ Category at the awards ceremony in Leeds on Monday (June 14).

Internal sex trafficking, where young people are trafficked between cities within one country, is estimated to affect upwards of 10,000 women and young people in the UK alone. Many victims are befriended by criminals who gain their trust by buying them gifts and building sham relationships. They are introduced to Class-A drugs and alcohol then forced to have sex with other men and moved around the UK sex trade in gang networks.

By interacting with young people away from the classroom My Dangerous Loverboy encourages young people aged between 12 and 18 to be creative in communicating the campaigns key messages. Through making posters, writing music and shooting their own video adverts the young users help safeguard their own futures by raising awareness in a way which captures their peers attention.

Founder Darren Bristow said: “By taking our message to websites used by young people we have seen how their creative energies can help our message to develop and create real hype, which has been hugely rewarding.

“To be nominated for the award is a great honour but the wider aim is to raise awareness still further and help protect future generations of young people from a life of abuse. Whether we win or lose if more people go online and join our campaign groups it will help us continue to make a real difference.”
